Book Description
In June of
2008 Dennis Stolen embarked on a month-long African safari through
Uganda,
Kenya and
Tanzania/Zanzibar. This experience resulted in his book, Stolen
Moments In
East Africa.
Containing over 200 photographs, it is a book that can be read on any
of three
levels: (1)
as an informative travelogue of a 28 day camping safari; (2) as a
descriptive
collection
of short anecdotes and stories covering a host of unique and
entertaining
experiences; (3) as a philosophic experience in which the importance
of ‘stealing the
moment’
from our everyday, busy lives becomes the dominant theme.
The book
will appeal to the aficionado of photography, who can feast on
picturesque
scenery
such as the vast Ngorongoro Crater, or gaze at Zanzibar sunsets. The
animal
lover will
be captivated by the close, almost palpable, encounters with African
wildlife.
The
armchair adventurer will vicariously chase hyenas or hippos from the
campsite, or
sit in the
huts of the Masai and the remote Pokot people. The active outdoors
person
can feel
the panic of fighting the force of the frothy Nile, after being thrown
into its rapids
from a
rubber raft. And for all, Stolen Moments In East Africa
should reinforce the need
to pursue
the magic of the ‘stolen moment’ as an antidote to our hectic-paced
lives.
About the Author
Born in
Alberta, Dennis Stolen moved to British Columbia where, until his
retirement,
he served
as a school administrator for twenty-four years. His passion for
athletics
motivated
him to participate in a wide variety of sports. More recently, this
has included
triathlon
with a number of provincial age-group titles, and several successful
Ironman races.
Dennis is
an avid traveler and adventurer, which over the years has motivated
him to enjoy a
number of
exploits such as: canoeing the 116 kilometre Bowron Lakes in B.C.;
trekking the
75
kilometre West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island; hiking through the
mountainous jungle of
Iriomote
Island, Japan; backpacking in Belize; scuba diving in Bonaire;
climbing temples in
Tikal; and
his recent one- month camping safari throughout East Africa.
Dennis
advocates retaining an ongoing ‘bucket list’ of goals and aspirations
to actively
pursue, but
understands that most often the moments must first be ‘stolen’ from
our busy
lives
before we can begin to realize them. His commitment to this
philosophy, and his desire
to share it
with others, led him to write Stolen Moments In East Africa.
In addition to sharing
his own
unique experiences in his book, he hopes to encourage others to avoid
procrastination,
and to
begin stealing those moments that will fulfill their own dreams.
